What is Elastic APM?

Elastic APM is the application performance monitoring component of the Elastic Observability platform, built on top of Elasticsearch. It provides end to end distributed tracing, automatic error and exception grouping, and host and runtime level metrics for languages including Java, .NET, Python, Go, Node.js, Ruby, and PHP. Machine learning powered anomaly detection and correlations help teams spot unusual latency or failure patterns, and native support for OpenTelemetry, W3C trace context, and Jaeger makes it easy to fit into existing instrumentation.

Elastic Cloud Serverless prices Observability usage per gigabyte, with a Logs Essentials tier starting as low as $0.07 per GB ingested and a Complete tier at $0.09 per GB for logs and traces plus $0.023 per GB for metrics, each with separate retention charges. Self managed and hosted subscription tiers are also available but require contacting sales for exact pricing, and a free trial is available through Elastic Cloud.

Key Features of Elastic APM

Elastic APM lists 8 documented features, including End-to-end distributed tracing across services, Automatic error and exception tracking with stack-trace grouping and Host and runtime metrics collection (JVM, Go runtime, etc.). The list below covers what the product does rather than how it is marketed.

  • End-to-end distributed tracing across services
  • Automatic error and exception tracking with stack-trace grouping
  • Host and runtime metrics collection (JVM, Go runtime, etc.)
  • Machine learning based anomaly detection and correlations
  • Native OpenTelemetry, W3C trace context, and Jaeger support
