Free AI Companion Apps: What the Free Tier Includes
Every AI companion app is free to download, and that tells you almost nothing.
The free tier is what matters. It decides the number of messages you get, how much the app remembers and which features stay locked.
So we read the help and pricing pages of six companion apps and wrote down what each free tier allows.
Free means four different things. It means chat that stays free on three apps, a monthly allowance on one, a daily one on another, and five messages in total on the last.
Key Takeaways
- Free means chat that stays free, a monthly allowance, a daily allowance or a five-message trial, depending on the app.
- Character.AI, Replika and Kindroid keep chatting free, and put features or speed behind plans.
- CrushOn AI gives 100 message credits a month, Nomi a daily allowance and Candy AI 5 messages in total.
- Free plans remember less: CrushOn keeps 200 messages per character, against 300 on the next plan up.
- Kindroid’s 3-day premium trial needs a payment method and converts into a subscription unless you cancel.
How We Checked
Every limit below comes from the vendor’s own help or pricing page, linked beside it, as it read on 1 October 2026. We didn’t create accounts.
Candy AI’s figures come from our 24 September test of its help center, where the article was dated 5 August 2026. Plans change often, so treat each limit as true on the date we read it.
We compared limits, not quality. An app with a generous free tier can still be a worse conversation than one with a tight one.
What Each Free Tier Includes
| App | What free includes | What stays locked |
|---|---|---|
| Character.AI | Free and unlimited messaging for all users | Skipping the waiting room, faster generation and early features, on c.ai+ |
| Replika | Chatting, always free, with avatar customization | Voice calls, guided conversations, roleplay options and advanced customization |
| Kindroid | Unlimited messages on its smaller Lite model, 2 Kindroids and about 5 minutes of audio, once | Flagship models, 10 Kindroids and longer replies |
| Nomi | A daily message allowance, with the count unstated | Messages after the allowance, and up to 10 active Nomis on paid accounts |
| CrushOn AI | 100 message credits a month and unlimited use of its free models | Ultra models, which are unavailable, and Pro models, which cost credits |
| Candy AI | 5 messages across all characters, 1 custom AI and 1 image | Unlimited chat, which comes with a paid plan |
Nomi’s pages say free accounts get daily messages but don’t state the count. We left the number out rather than guess it.

Three Kinds of Free
The six apps fall into three groups, and the group tells you more than the word “free”.
- Chat that stays free, with limits elsewhere: Character.AI, Replika and Kindroid.
- Metered by a refilling allowance: CrushOn AI by the month and Nomi by the day.
- A one-off taste: Candy AI, at 5 messages in total.
A free tier that stays free suits someone who wants to chat daily without paying. A metered one suits someone who chats in bursts. A one-off taste is a trial, and it should be read that way.
Free Doesn’t Mean Fast
Three free tiers trade speed for price. Character.AI says it keeps messaging free and unlimited, and that its waiting room exists to manage peak loads. Subscribers skip it.
Kindroid says free users may see slower speeds during high traffic, while paid users have dedicated servers. CrushOn AI’s free plan runs on shared chat capacity, and its pricing page says responses may be slower at peak time.
If you chat in the evening, when traffic is highest, the free experience can feel different from one in the morning.
Free Plans Remember Less
Memory is the limit that shows up last and hurts most.
Kindroid’s free users get basic long-term memory recall and no Cascaded Memory, the feature it uses for medium-term recall. CrushOn AI‘s free plan lists 8K memory and 200 historical messages per character. The next plan up lists 16K and 300.
That difference matters most for roleplay and long conversations. It decides whether the character remembers last week.

Replies Get Shorter Too
Kindroid’s help page gives a number for it. Free members get replies of about 500 to 700 characters, and paid members get 1,000 to 1,400.
A free reply is about half as long. If you value long, detailed answers, that gap matters more than the message count.
A Free Trial Can Become a Subscription
Read the trial terms before you start one.
Kindroid offers new free users a 3-day premium trial. The trial requires a payment method on file and converts into a subscription automatically if you don’t cancel within the trial period.
That makes it different from a free plan, which never asks for a card. Put a reminder in your calendar the day you start.
Limits Say Nothing About Your Chats
Price and privacy are separate questions.
The limits above describe what you can do, not what the app does with your chats. What each app says about your chats, and its age rule, are in our AI companion apps test.
Candy AI and CrushOn AI are listed under adult, 18+ apps in that guide.
A One-Evening Test of Any Free Tier
You can find a free tier’s real limits in one evening without paying.
- Send messages until the app stops you, and note the count.
- Mention a detail early, then ask about it an hour later to test memory.
- Count the characters in a typical reply, and compare it with the figures above.
- Try once at peak evening time, and once in the morning, to see the speed difference.
- Look up how to cancel before you enter a card for any trial.
That’s about two hours, and it costs nothing. It tells you more than a ranking of apps from a site that makes one of them.
How to Pick Between Them
- Choose an unlimited tier if you want to chat every day without paying.
- Choose a refilling allowance if you chat in bursts, and check how it resets.
- Treat a one-off allowance as a trial, then decide whether to pay.
- Check the memory and reply length if you plan long conversations.
- Avoid starting a premium trial unless you plan to cancel or keep it.
Questions to Ask Before Starting
- Ask whether the free allowance refills daily, monthly or never.
- Ask what memory the free plan keeps.
- Ask whether free chats run slower at peak time.
- Ask whether a trial needs a card on file.
- Ask the app’s minimum age before you or anyone else signs up.
The Numbers for CrushOn AI
CrushOn AI publishes its free limits as one comparison table on its pricing page, so it’s the easiest to compare.
Our CrushOn AI listing has the full test, including its plans and what its privacy policy says about chats.
Questions People Ask About Free AI Companion Apps
What is the best free AI companion app?
The best free AI companion app depends on the limits you need, and we compared limits rather than quality. Character.AI says messaging is free and unlimited for all users, and Replika says chatting is always free.
Are free AI companion apps fully free?
Chatting is free on Character.AI, Replika and Kindroid, while features sit behind subscriptions. Candy AI’s free account allows 5 messages in total, so it works as a trial.
Do free AI companion apps limit messages?
Three of the six do. CrushOn AI gives 100 message credits a month, Nomi gives a daily allowance, and Candy AI gives 5 messages in total.
Can I try a paid companion plan for free?
Kindroid offers new free users a 3-day premium trial. It needs a payment method on file and converts into a subscription unless you cancel in time.
Do free limits say anything about my chats?
These limits cover what you can do, not what the app does with your chats. Our companion apps test covers that, along with each app’s age rule.
Free Is a Tier, Not a Promise
The word “free” on a companion app covers a range from unlimited chat to five messages.
Read the limit, the memory and the trial terms before you get attached to a character. A free tier you outgrow in a week is a trial, and a free tier that never expires is a plan.
