What is Palo Alto Networks?

Palo Alto Networks provides a security platform covering network security, secure access service edge, cloud security, endpoint protection and security operations, backed by Unit 42 threat intelligence. Its current emphasis is securing AI: Idira for identity across AI enterprises, frontier AI network security, and the acquisition of Portkey to secure AI agents.

Identity for AI agents is the substantive new problem and it is worth understanding rather than dismissing as positioning. An autonomous agent acting on a company's systems needs credentials, permissions and an audit trail, and existing identity systems were designed for people who log in, take actions attributable to them, and leave. An agent invoked by another agent on behalf of a user fits none of those assumptions.

Consolidating onto a platform is the strategy and the analyst recognition the vendor cites across SASE, security service edge and endpoint reflects it. The argument is that separately purchased tools produce gaps at their boundaries, which is where breaches happen.

The counterargument deserves equal weight. Platform consolidation means one vendor's weakness becomes the organisation's weakness, with no second opinion anywhere in the stack.

Palo Alto Networks FAQs

No rate is published. The company sells through partners with subscription and appliance components, so pricing depends on which platform elements are taken and at what scale.

Credentials, permissions and an audit trail for autonomous agents. Existing identity systems were designed for people who log in and take attributable actions, which an agent invoked by another agent does not fit.

The vendor's next-generation identity security platform, positioned as securing every identity for the AI enterprise, launched alongside its wider AI security work.

Separately purchased tools produce gaps at their boundaries, which is where breaches happen. The vendor cites analyst leadership across SASE, security service edge and endpoint to support the platform case.

One vendor's weakness becomes the organisation's weakness, with no second opinion anywhere in the stack. Consolidation trades resilience through diversity for coherence.
