The API first approach distinguishes it from products aimed at end users. A healthcare or financial organisation frequently does not want its staff logging into another portal, it wants secure exchange happening inside the application they already use, so an API that adds encrypted delivery to an existing workflow serves that better than a destination product.

The Secure Message Center covers the case where a recipient has no compatible system, delivering a notification and holding the message behind authentication.
