What is Descartes Systems?

Descartes provides logistics and supply chain software with connectivity and messaging at its centre, covering electronic data interchange and e-invoicing through a global network that centralises processes and maintains compliance with local regulations across markets.

The network positioning is the important distinction. Most logistics software helps one company run its own operations. A connectivity network's value is instead a function of who else is on it, because EDI is fundamentally about two parties exchanging structured messages, and a network with more participants means fewer bespoke connections to build.

That produces a different buying calculation. Software is evaluated on features; a network is evaluated on whether your trading partners are already connected to it, and a network with your three largest customers already on it is worth more than a technically superior one without them.

E-invoicing compliance across local regulations is where this gets genuinely difficult and where the value concentrates. Electronic invoicing mandates have spread rapidly, with countries introducing their own formats, clearance models and submission requirements, frequently on short timelines. Italy, Poland, India, Brazil, Mexico and Saudi Arabia each did it differently. A company invoicing across twenty countries cannot track twenty independently changing regulatory regimes, and getting it wrong means invoices that are not legally valid, which means they do not get paid.

A trusted global provider maintaining that compliance is the actual product, and it is one that only makes sense to buy rather than build.

Published EDI partner listings support the network side. Pricing is not published, which is normal for network-based services priced on transaction volume.

Descartes Systems FAQs

No pricing is published, which is normal for network-based services. Cost typically depends on transaction or message volume and the number of trading partner connections.

On who is already connected to it. A network with your three largest customers already present is worth more than a technically superior one without them, because the connections are the product.

Because mandates have spread rapidly with each country introducing its own formats, clearance models and submission requirements. Italy, Poland, India, Brazil, Mexico and Saudi Arabia each did it differently.

Invoices that are not legally valid, which means they do not get paid. That is a cash flow failure rather than a compliance inconvenience, and it accumulates silently across a market.

Because a company invoicing across twenty countries cannot track twenty independently changing regulatory regimes. Maintaining that compliance is the actual product, and it does not amortise across one company.
