What is ScyllaDB?

ScyllaDB is a NoSQL database purpose-built for data-intensive applications needing high throughput and predictable low latency, with a close-to-the-metal architecture the company says handles millions of operations per second at single-digit millisecond latencies.

Predictable is the word doing the work in that claim, and it is the right one to focus on. Average latency is a weak measure for an interactive system, because the requests that ruin a user's experience are the slow tail, and a database with excellent average performance and an unpredictable ninety-ninth percentile produces intermittent problems that are miserable to diagnose. Engineering for consistency rather than for a headline average is a meaningfully different target.

The Alternator API is a genuinely useful piece of positioning: a DynamoDB-compatible interface allowing applications written against Amazon's database to run on ScyllaDB, on a customer's own infrastructure or another cloud, without rewriting the data access layer. For a team worried about single-cloud dependence, that is one of the few practical exits available.
