What is OpenNode?

OpenNode is a Bitcoin payment processor built around the Lightning Network, offering hosted checkout, a payment button, e-commerce integrations, currency conversion, settlement and transfer, billing, in person payments and payouts, all reachable through a Bitcoin API with documentation and implementation guides.

Supporting Bitcoin only is a deliberate narrowing and it is what allows the Lightning focus to mean anything. Lightning settles payments in seconds at negligible cost, which fixes the two objections that made Bitcoin impractical for ordinary commerce, and a processor spreading itself across hundreds of tokens cannot invest in that infrastructure to the same depth.

The fee structure follows directly from that architecture. Lightning settlement to a Bitcoin wallet is free and instant, while on chain settlement carries a 1 percent fee, so the pricing pushes merchants toward the rail the company is built on rather than treating both as equivalent.

Scheduled settlement to a bank in local currency, processed daily with transfers the next business day, is what makes the product usable by a business that does not want to hold Bitcoin at all, which is most of them. A merchant accepting Bitcoin is usually trying to reach a customer who wants to pay that way, not to take a position on the currency, and a processor that ignores the distinction loses the sale.

Yes. Scheduled settlement converts to local currency and transfers to a bank, processed daily, which is what most businesses accepting crypto actually want.
