What is IBM Rational Rhapsody?

IBM Rational Rhapsody, now sold as IBM Engineering Rhapsody, is a model driven development environment for systems engineering and embedded software design. It covers modelling, visualisation and management of complex systems, with simulation and prototyping used to validate a design continuously rather than only at the end.

Simulation is what separates it from a drawing tool and it is the core of its value. An architecture diagram represents intent, but executing the model shows behaviour, and behaviour is where design errors actually live. Finding a fault by simulating a model costs a fraction of finding it in integration testing, and in embedded systems, where hardware may not exist yet, simulating the design is often the only way to test it at all.

Code generation from models extends the same principle into implementation, keeping the model as the authoritative artefact rather than as documentation that drifts from the code within weeks. That is the recurring failure of model based approaches and generation is the mechanism that prevents it.

Rhapsody sits within IBM's wider engineering portfolio, connecting to requirements management and test so a requirement traces through to the model element implementing it and the test verifying it. That traceability is a formal obligation in safety critical development rather than good practice.

It is now sold as IBM Engineering Rhapsody, with the Rational Rhapsody name retained in the vendor's own description of the product family.
