AVEVA PI System is an integrated portfolio of solutions enabling industrial operations to collect, cleanse, store, enrich and visualise real time data. It is the closest thing this category has to an established standard, functioning as the operational data infrastructure that other applications draw on rather than as an application in its own right.

Vendor neutral connectivity is the defining characteristic. AVEVA states that PI System can manage operations data from just about any source, which matters enormously in industrial settings where a single plant may run control systems, instruments and historians from a dozen manufacturers accumulated over decades. Replacing that equipment is not an option, so the data layer has to accommodate all of it.

AVEVA describes users spanning operators and plant managers through data analysts to executives, all working from the same data to optimise efficiency, build resilience and drive sustainability. That breadth is what distinguishes an infrastructure product from a departmental tool.
