What is AWS IoT Greengrass?
AWS IoT Greengrass is an open-source edge runtime and cloud service for building, deploying and managing device software, letting teams bring cloud processing and logic to edge devices and keep operating even with intermittent connectivity. The current version is IoT Greengrass V2; AWS strongly recommends teams still on V1 migrate to V2 for continued support and capability.
Teams build modular components faster using prebuilt or custom modular components, easily adding or removing pieces to control a device's software footprint rather than shipping one monolithic firmware image. Software and configuration can be remotely deployed and managed at scale without requiring firmware updates for every change, and devices can be programmed to transmit only high-value data, keeping cloud costs down while still delivering rich insights.
Common use cases include running intelligence at the edge (like anomaly detection in precision agriculture or powering autonomous devices), managing new or legacy apps across device fleets using any language, packaging technology or runtime, controlling fleets locally or remotely via MQTT or other messaging protocols, and locally collecting, aggregating and filtering data before deciding what goes to the cloud. Pricing is not summarized on one page; AWS IoT Greengrass follows AWS's usage-based pricing model, detailed on AWS's general pricing resources.
