What is Paychex PEO?

Paychex PEO is the co-employment offering within Paychex's wider payroll and human capital management business, which spans payroll services, HR and compliance guidance, talent management, workforce management and benefits. The company has also acquired Paycor, adding a further HCM platform to the group.

Buying a PEO from an established payroll company changes what happens if the relationship ends, and that is worth weighing at the start. Exiting a PEO means moving employment records, tax registrations and benefit enrolments, which is disruptive. A provider that also sells standalone payroll offers a path out of co-employment that keeps the payroll relationship, whereas a pure PEO offers exit only to a competitor.

Scale is the other consideration and it cuts both ways. A large provider pools more employees, which is what produces benefit pricing a small company cannot obtain alone, but service is delivered through a structure rather than by a named person, which is precisely what smaller PEOs compete on.

The Paycor acquisition adds capability and uncertainty at once, since two overlapping platforms inside one group eventually resolve in favour of one of them. A buyer signing now should ask which, and what a migration would involve if the answer is not the platform they were sold.

Paychex PEO FAQs

No rate is published. The only figure on the captured page was 23,000 dollars in fines from a customer anecdote, which is not a price. PEO pricing depends on headcount and the benefit plans chosen.

Exiting a PEO means moving employment records, tax registrations and benefit enrolments. A provider that also sells standalone payroll offers a path out of co-employment that keeps the payroll relationship.

A larger provider pools more employees, which produces benefit pricing a small company cannot obtain alone. The trade off is service delivered through a structure rather than by a named person.

Paychex has acquired Paycor, adding another HCM platform to the group. Two overlapping platforms inside one company eventually resolve in favour of one, which is worth asking about.

Payroll services, HR and compliance guidance, talent management, workforce management, benefits administration and retirement plans, available separately from the PEO arrangement.
