What is PTC Windchill?

Windchill is PTC's enterprise product lifecycle management system, covering product data management, bill of materials, change and configuration management, quality and regulatory compliance, service information and supplier collaboration, alongside Creo, ThingWorx and the rest of the PTC range.

Getting product data to non-engineers is the argument Windchill leads with and it identifies the real waste in most manufacturers. Purchasing, quality, service and manufacturing all need to know what a product is made of, and if the only way to find out is to ask an engineer or open a CAD file, those questions get answered slowly and sometimes wrongly.

Quality and regulatory compliance being part of the same system rather than a neighbouring one matters in regulated manufacturing, where demonstrating that a shipped device matched an approved design means connecting the change record to the compliance record, and doing that across two systems is where audits find gaps.

Service information is the part most PLM buyers underestimate, since the technical documentation a field engineer uses has to reflect the configuration of the specific unit in front of them rather than the current design, and generating that from the product structure is the only way it stays correct. Role-based access is what lets purchasing and service read the product without a CAD licence, which is the practical mechanism behind the whole argument. Rates are not published.
