What is Solaris?

Solaris is a European banking-as-a-service provider holding its own banking licence, offering digital banking accounts, know-your-customer and know-your-business platforms, debit, prepaid and credit cards, payment sending and acceptance, and consumer lending including buy now pay later through Splitpay.

Holding the licence itself rather than partnering for it is the structural fact and it changes the relationship entirely. A platform intermediating between a fintech and a separate sponsor bank passes decisions and risk appetite between three parties, whereas a licensed bank offering its own capability by API answers for itself. In European regulation that is a materially different arrangement.

The know-your-business platform alongside know-your-customer is worth noting because business onboarding is considerably harder than consumer. Verifying a company means establishing its legal existence, its ownership structure, its beneficial owners and whether any of them are sanctioned, across jurisdictions with different registries and standards.

The industry list shows where embedded finance actually sells in Europe: software providers, cloud accounting and ERP vendors, HR technology, wealth platforms, travel and mobility. Cloud accounting is the clearest case, since an accounting product that can also hold the money and move it becomes the financial hub rather than a record of what happened elsewhere.
