What is Alpaca?

Alpaca provides brokerage infrastructure as an API. Its Broker API supports an end to end brokerage platform for companies offering investing to their own users, its Trading API executes algorithmic strategies, and Market Data supplies real time equities data. Asset classes cover US stocks, ETFs and options, with a TradingView integration, an MCP server and a QuantConnect connection.

Splitting Broker from Trading is the distinction that matters when choosing. The Trading API serves someone running their own strategies with their own money. The Broker API serves a company whose users each need an account, which means handling onboarding, know your customer checks, custody and regulatory reporting for people who are not the developer. Those are entirely different products with the same market underneath.

Offering brokerage as infrastructure is what lets a fintech or a digital wallet add investing without becoming a broker dealer, which is a licensing and compliance undertaking most companies would abandon on discovering its scope.

The MCP server signals where this is heading, letting an AI assistant execute trades directly, which is a capability worth understanding carefully before enabling it against an account holding real money.
