What is SAP Ariba?

SAP Ariba is SAP's spend management and procurement suite, offering an integrated source to pay capability the vendor describes as autonomous spend management. It covers sourcing, contracts, supplier management and procure to pay, and is backed by the Ariba Network connecting buyers and suppliers.

The network is what genuinely distinguishes Ariba from other suites. Procurement software has a chicken and egg problem, since its value depends on suppliers participating and suppliers only participate where their customers already are. A network with a very large existing supplier population means many of an organisation's suppliers are already registered and transacting, which removes the onboarding effort that otherwise sinks these programmes.
