Toast is a restaurant platform spanning point of sale, online ordering, delivery services, marketing, loyalty, gift cards, guest CRM, scheduling and tips management, payroll, inventory and cost analytics through xtraCHEF, kitchen display, handheld and kiosk hardware, retail point of sale, and finance products including capital loans, checking and instant deposit.

The finance products are the part that changes what Toast is. A company that processes a restaurant's payments can see its revenue daily, which makes it a far better judge of that restaurant's creditworthiness than a bank reading annual accounts, and capital loans, checking and instant deposit follow from that visibility rather than from a decision to enter banking.

That same position explains the payroll and team management suite. Once the platform knows hours worked from scheduling and revenue from payments, running payroll is a short step, and tips management specifically is a job restaurants find genuinely difficult because the rules are fiddly and the consequences of getting it wrong are legal.

Extending into retail point of sale for convenience stores, bottle shops, grocers, butchers and apparel is a widening of scope worth noting, since it is the same technology aimed at a different buyer and puts Toast against general retail POS vendors rather than restaurant ones.
