What is Alfresco?
Alfresco is an open, scalable, cloud-native content, process and governance management suite, now sold by Hyland. That ownership change is the first thing to establish when researching it, since a great deal of published material predates the acquisition. The positioning under Hyland is to intelligently activate processes and content to accelerate the flow of business, and the product sits alongside Hyland's wider portfolio covering intelligent document processing, process automation and digital asset management.
Six capabilities define it. Document management lets users find and access precise information from anywhere on any device through web-based viewing tools. Intelligent process management integrates process and content services so content-centric processes are streamlined rather than handled as separate workflow and storage systems. Enterprise collaboration extends Microsoft 365 and Google Docs rather than replacing them, which matters for organisations that are not going to move off either. Alfresco Governance Services automates the information lifecycle with little user intervention, reducing business risk and strengthening compliance, and this automation is the point: governance that depends on users classifying documents correctly generally fails.
Intelligence and analytics automatically enrich content and metadata and extract valuable information, which addresses the volume problem in large repositories where manual tagging cannot keep up. Extensibility rests on open standards and APIs, so integration and customisation are practical rather than theoretical, with integrations keeping data consistent across systems and improving capture. Published case studies are substantial: Liberty Mutual reporting 21 million dollars saved over five years, RBC Capital Markets modernising operations, Cisco, and Trust Bank Singapore. Hyland was named a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Document Management. A free trial is offered and pricing is not published.
