What is Plastic SCM (Unity)?

Plastic SCM, now branded as Unity Version Control, is a distributed version control system originally built by Codice Software and acquired by Unity Technologies in 2020. It is designed to handle projects with large binary assets, such as games, more efficiently than Git, offering a visual branch explorer, semantic merge for code, and a lightweight Gluon mode for artists and designers who only need to check out and submit files without managing full history.

Unity Version Control integrates directly with the Unity Editor as well as Unreal Engine and common IDEs, and can be run through Unity's cloud service or hosted on premises. As of 2026 Unity removed per seat charges for cloud hosted Unity Version Control, offering a free monthly allowance of storage and data egress with usage based charges beyond that. It is primarily used by game studios and teams working with large, frequently changing binary content.
